Against the Grain (-ish)

Prior to singing in Hideo, I got to be all “Blair” and try to instill game music into my surroundings. Sometimes it was brilliant, and other times it was met with “omgwtfbbq”.

First Attempt
In high school, I switched piano teachers from the amazing Ms. Pheigh (who had then retired) to the not-so-wonderful Ms. Gleddie (she likely wasn’t bad, but I had only the best model to judge her by). There was no way I’d ever get to play anything “fun” for her (the music’s challenges were fun in and of themselves, of course), that is, until I found out that in our group lessons, we were allowed to play a piece of music of our choosing for the other students. While everyone else brought in their favorite pieces from their lessons, I brought in the Final Fantasy Prelude and the Coin Song. OH MAN, I was so stoked. They didn’t really get it though, so I felt just as weird as I did excited. (rating: omgwtfbbq)

Second Attempt
Mid-high school career, I completed FFIX. When it came time in choir to do solos-for-the-class day, I had to make it special. I borrowed Desiree’s Aerith outfit (I envied cosplayers and felt like -magic- when wearing it), carried a bouquet of flowers, and sang “Melodies of Life” from IX. (Yes, I know, I know. But it was the only outfit available and song I could sing!) About half of the students knew the song, so that was some degree of props. The teacher thought it was completely silly. (rating: half omgwtfbbq, half decent)

Third Attempt
Last Spring we had a teacher talent show, and of course there were some awesome things (actual trained dancers were the most awesome) and some very silly things (teachers pretending to dance and lip-syncing to songs). Since I was the vocal teacher (and since my students can dance proverbial piano circles around me), I decided to sing something operatic. Guess what I sang? The Aria from FFVI! And a ton of students recognized it. Not only that, but those who didn’t just found the song really awesome and powerful as an opera aria. That was pretty special. (rating: brilliant!)

I hope there have been opportunities for you to show the world something fun and special that’s a little different, maybe a piece of art or music that you didn’t think would be appreciated, but was totally worth putting out the effort for. That’s what I think Hideo is all about — showing the world something that’s different, but totally worthwhile. (rating: awesomeness)
