On a recent trip up to Lake Tahoe, my friend plugged in his iPod to the car deck and said, “Hey man, I found this band you might like… they remind me of that Mega Man Medley you guys perform.” The band? Named after none other than the infamous Power Glove.
Powerglove is a metal band that covers not only familiar video game tunes, but also a variety of other material in metal fashion. We listened to about an hour’s worth of Powerglove material on the way to Tahoe, which actually kicked off with the amazing Mario medley shown above. Also of note, their Legend of Zelda medley:
Besides video game covers, I was surprised to hear heavy takes on cartoon themes such as X-Men (I instantly had all my Saturday morning memories come flooding back in a headbanging fashion):
They have an album called Saturday Morning Apocalypse (which the above X-Men theme is taken from), which has other themes such as Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Inspector Gadget, and Transformers brutally covered. It’s fantastic. We also heard a version of “This Is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas. There’s almost nothing these guys won’t tackle!
Looking around on YouTube for more material, I came upon their version of Dr. Wily’s Theme, which is a part of Hideo‘s Mega Man Medley. Their version is pretty awesome, with double kicks and riffing abound. We could take some notes here if we want to musically punch our audience in the face.
