After a recent Hideo meeting, the video game Borderlands was brought up, as fellow Hideo-ites Chris and Blair have been playing it and had just wrapped up their first playthrough. For the unaware, Borderlands is essentially Diablo as a first person shooter (basically crack to me) and the sequel has been recently announced to much fanfare from fans like myself.
“Too many hours” is how I’d describe my time with Borderlands and all of its downloadable content, and I mean that in the nicest way possible. I loved Diablo and Diablo II (and still do), so the element of choosing a character class, questing, and looting areas for rare weapons and accessories, all in a first person shooter (one of my top genres), was the best thing since… well… Diablo (this description sold fellow Hideo-ite Gary Der at the meeting, and now he’s gone and picked up the game). With great cel-shaded graphics and some intense gameplay, Borderlands almost never left my PS3 blu-ray drive. My best friend and I would consistently play co-op, and every new DLC released meant new challenges to conquer and new guns to collect. (Almost a year later, and we’re still feeling the burn from trying the marathon-esque Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot challenges and failing… WE WILL CONQUER YOU. Eventually.)
When Borderlands developer Gearbox announced the sequel nearly two weeks ago, I didn’t really expect too much because it’s a game announcement. But lo and behold, a plethora of new info came flooding out. And also a teaser featuring a new character class:
And just this morning, more detail was released about the character featured in the video and photo above: The Gunzerker. So, needless to say, I’m ridiculously excited (even with the game far away in the mystical land of 2012!). If you haven’t yet tried out the greatness that is Borderlands, pick up the Game of the Year Edition with all bundled DLC on disc from Gamestop or Amazon, or download it on the Playstation Network or Xbox Live.
