Dos Preguntas

Hey. Schyler here. I’m the guy who wrote the show. I have an English degree from CSUS and have been writing as long as I can remember. Working on Hideo was a hell of an experience.  I’m looking forward to discussing writing for Hideo in this blog, but that won’t be the only thing I talk about here. Which leads me to two questions.

First Question: have you watched more anime than I have? If you’ve seen excess of a few hours, then the answer you’re looking for is yes.

One of the best parts of Hideo was the group of people it brought together. Some were there just for the sake of good music and drama. But most of the performers were big fans of anime and video games. They came together to take part in something that sprang directly from something they’re a fan of.

In between runs and rehearsals, countless conversations would spark. “Did you see this one episode where this one thing happens?” and the like. These were conversations I could not participate in. I just didn’t know anything about what they were saying. Sure, I’ve checked out plenty of video games. Mainstream ones anyway. But anime? Not so much; I’ve caught a bit here and there, but not much else.

The undeniable truth is that anime is a bit of a cultural phenomenon. This, coupled with the fact that I’m taking part in something that draws on anime music for inspiration, has led me to a decision. I’ve decided to watch some of the classics of the genre. I’m going to dive in, so to speak, and see what the deal is. Is anime truly home to a great amount of originality and art as some of its fans claim? I plan to find out.

Which brings us now to my Second Question, one that is simple yet difficult: which series should I watch first? Should it be Fullmetal Alchemist? Perhaps Cowboy Bebop? There’s a good amount to choose from, but I’ll probably start with one of those. Unless of course, someone sends me a suggestion for something that sounds more interesting.

I’ll be letting you know my thoughts, critiques and impressions as I work my way through whichever series I pick. In between reviews, I’ll talk about the experiences I have writing for Hideo as we continue to gear up for the next project in the works.

Oh, and if your answer to the First Question wasn’t a resounding yes, than I humbly invite you to join me on this little television safari. Let’s see what we’ve been missing.

I haven’t watched a ton of anime, but I would recommend Trigun. It’s a “space western”, sci-fi world with gunslinger elements. It starts off lighthearted and silly, but gets serious and darker toward the end.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a great series to get started on as it incorporates classic Anime elements, creates what would later become standard, and has volumes of theories/critiques online.
