Mass Effect 3 cannot get here soon enough. E3 only whetted my appetite. Now I’ve learned that weapons are going to have customized attachments. Hell yeah. And the OMNI Blade? Holy crap. Skewer your enemies at close range? Yes, please. Plus the idea of voice commands through Kinect has piqued my interest in the Xbox add-on. As it is, I yell at my squad mates anyway. Might as well have them respond to it.
Turns out Bioware is taking submissions for a fan art exhibition at Comic-Con. Pretty cool idea. In a way, Hideo is musical fan art, so I think it’s only fair we give a shout out to the most impressive fan art I have personally seen, which just happens to be Mass Effect-based.
I first saw Patryk Olejniczak’s stuff a while back when it was featured in the news feed on the official Mass Effect site. If you’re like me, you will be overwhelmed by how awesome his work is, not only for the technical excellence, but also the way in which he captures the essence of the characters. Well done, sir.
My personal favorite has to be this image of Miranda. Not my favorite character, but the art stands on its own.
Miranda goes through life wondering if she ever actually achieves anything of her own accord, or if the genetic tailoring her father forced upon her is the true reason for her successes. Despite her veneer of total self-confidence, she is no stranger to self-doubt. This image feels like Miranda minus the veneer. You can almost see her self-doubt. Her fatigue. Beautiful stuff.
This image of Jack gets runner up, if only because Jack is my favorite character from Mass Effect 2.
And holy crap—
Mr. Olejniczak’s added a bunch more pictures since I first saw his work. It totally blows my mind because this Femshep looks very similar to my very first and still favorite Shepard. I understand the need to stick with one Shepard in a marketing scheme, and “Iconic Shepard” is cool and all, but it’s still sad I can’t buy a poster or something with my own Shephards on it. But hey, at least I just found a new desktop picture.
Seriously, this isn’t even fan art. It’s art, pure and simple, and it would be a travesty for it not to be seen at Comic-Con.
